Planting plan
Five major vegetation types are to be created at Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, with the aim that they become self sustaining in the future. The vegetation types are based on those which were once widespread in the Hamilton Basin.
• Kauri, tanekaha, rewarewa conifer-broadleaved forest
• Tawa, rimu broadleaved-podocarp forest
• Kahikatea, pukatea semi-swamp forest
• Peat lake margin and swamp wetland
• Peat lake/aquatic ecosystem

These vegetation types are associated with specific landforms, soils and drainage found in the park. For example kauri and tawa dominant forests are found on the ridges and hillslopes. The vegetation types need to be completely reconstructed from the pastrol system the park began with. Planting in the park will be implemented in stages to spread the cost and workload of the project.
Future plans
The two maps below are indicative of how the Waiwhakareke site will be developed over the next 20-25 years. The first map directs infrastructure and capital development proposed on site and the second map illustrates the years that particular areas within the area of the park will be planted.
